Is online marriage legal? Yes.

Online marriage is legal, simple as that. Utah law aligns with federal law that allows couples to get legally married online through a video call. The entire process, from getting a marriage license to tying the knot, is completed online without having to go anywhere in person.

No matter your residency or where you are located, you can legally get married online, just as if you were in a church or courthouse.

Whether you and your partner are physically together or apart, online marriage is legal and recognized in all 50 states.

How are online weddings legal?

Online marriage license

A marriage license must be issued by the government and obtained before the wedding. Online marriage licenses, issued through Utah, allow online weddings to be legal for couples of any residency and location.

Follows all laws.

The couple needs to be over 18, officiant physically located in the jurisdiction, have a valid marriage license from Utah County, give consent on video, and two witnesses to attest to the marriage. LoveLife follows all state and federal laws for couples to have a legal marriage.

U.S. marriage certificate

After the ceremony, the marriage license is submitted with the courts and the couple is issued a marriage certificate. The couple receives both a digital and physical copy of a certified U.S. marriage certificate.

Utah County Law

Online weddings are legal.

LoveLife online weddings are recognized in the United States and countries whose laws recognize foreign civil marriage. The "state" where the couple ties the knot determines legal eligibility, not state of residence. States (and most countries) cannot deny your LoveLife online marriage when all laws are followed.

U.S. Constitution

Online weddings are recognized.

The Full Faith & Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution guarantees that any state will recognize any kind of marriage from any jurisdiction as long as the marriage was entered into under the laws of that jurisdiction, meaning they do not violate federal or state laws.

Simply put, a marriage between two spouses performed in one state must be recognized by all states.

Being issued a marriage license.

A marriage license is a legal document that allows the couple to legally get married under the federal government. Without a marriage license, you cannot legally marry, and your union will not be recognized by the government. Furthermore, a valid, signed marriage license is required to receive a marriage certificate. Having an online wedding, everyone will sign the marriage license digitally rather than physically.

Obtain your marriage license online through the Utah County marriage license office portal. This process usually takes about an hour or less with no need to go anywhere in person. The Utah County marriage license fee is $72, with an additional $75 for shipping if being shipped outside the US. Once you’ve completed the process and pay the government fees, you’ll receive your marriage license via email. All this can be completed 24/7.

The following is required to apply for a marriage license:

  • Both parties must be at least 18 years old, according to Utah and federal law. Although 16-year-olds are allowed to marry, if you are 16 or 17, you need signed consent from a parent or guardian, which must be given in-person to the county clerk before a marriage license will be issued. This negates a lot of couples who are under 18 to marry online.
  • A valid government issued picture ID such as a passport, driver license, military ID, or state ID card.
  • Full names, birthdates, current address, and places of birth of both applicants (state and country).
  • Names and birth places of the parents of both applicants, including mother's maiden name.
  • Social security numbers of both applicants, unless an applicant doesn't have a social security number.
  • If either marriage applicant was divorced within the past 60 days, a legal copy of a divorce decree must be submitted to the county clerk. There is no waiting period after divorce to be remarried in the state of Utah.

Once you receive your marriage license from the Utah County, U.S.A. Marriage License division, forward the email you receive, along with the names of your witnesses (if you have them), and your valid form of ID for each person getting married, to [email protected].

There's no waiting period to get married in the state of Utah. You can get married as soon as you get your license, the only requirement are that you must have your marriage ceremony, with 2 witnesses, and your license signed and returned within 32 days of obtaining it. After the wedding ceremony with LoveLife, the officiant immediately submits the marriage license to the courts, and the couple receives a digital copy of the marriage certificate within minutes.  The physical copy will be mailed to the couple within 3 business days.
